This dissertation argues that artistic expression, which is often observed to decline in adolescence, can be reawakened through an adaptation of Lee Strasberg's sensory-emotional based “Method as used in the teaching of acting. This argument is advanced through the use of a case study which shows that artistic learning has been enlivened in a class of male adolescents through a specific pedagogical approach based upon Strasberg's work.

To set a groundwork for the study, findings from the areas of psychology and philosophy are advanced to suggest that the expressive arts are part of a complex psychological and intellectual process rooted in the developing sensory-emotional system. Evidence from these two branches of study supports the assertion that sensory-emotional processes become dullened in many individuals, largely through disuse in education. This situation leads to a narrow form of learning which is discordant with the natural developmental needs of the adolescent

The case study details a sixteen-week course which is comprised of a systematic series of activities designed to engage the sensory-emotional system of adolescents as an impetus to artmaking. Teacher/researcher observations, class discussions, and examples of student artwork are provided in order to trace the students' progress.

The findings of this dissertation suggest that sensory-emotional based pedagogy can foster an authentic, developmentally appropriate form of artistic engagement and heighten artistic understandings in adolescents. Tenets of twentieth century thought from the areas of philosophy, artistic theory, and psychology, are reintroduced to support the analysis and findings of the case study. Taken together, these findings suggest the existence of a uniquely human form of sensory-emotional activity which is at the root of genuine artistic expression.
