Using the semiotic assumption that all that exists can be subjected to categorization or classification, this study examines the cultural phenomena found in Nepali manuscript paintings. Taking a group of art objects—specifically Buddhist-Hindu manuscripts paintings from Nepal—this study classifies them to various stages of development using the contextual systems of style, iconography and religious doctrines. By viewing these manuscript paintings through several semiotic lenses, this study traces the origins and stylistic developments of Nepali manuscript paintings from the beginning of the 11<super> th</super> century to the first quarter of the 20<super>th</super> century. The study demonstrates that Nepali manuscript painting, contrary to the long-held view, is not representative of one style; rather, it involves a synthesis of many styles: Indian, Tibetan, and even European. This study, however, reveals that Nepali manuscript paintings, though they were influenced at various stages by the above-mentioned idioms, remain distinctively Nepali in character.

Comparing an art object with another to determine its date and place of origin is essentially a method used in art history, and the present study, to a greater extent, utilizes the methodology of comparing to arrive at the object's date and place of origin.
