The hypothesis of this research holds that art therapy is effective in reducing self-injurious behaviors, such as self-mutilation, suicide ideation, and various eating disorders while improving one's body image in women. This multiple case study design was researched at two midwestern counseling agencies. The female subjects attended several one hour art therapy sessions with this writer. The research design consisted of assessment, drawings, conversations, and observation. The study began with conversation about the subjects current feelings, instruction of the art task, art making, and processing of the art.
