Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Minnesota, 1998.
The success of the solution to a design problem depends on the designer's ability to problem solve. Interior design programs in higher education are required to teach problem solving, and students must be competent in problem solving for the program to obtain accreditation from the Foundation for Interior Design Education Research. Problem solving competencies are expected in entry-level interior design positions. Problem solving requires visualization skills. Some students have little difficulty visualizing solutions to problems while others struggle. Students' visualization skills may relate to learning styles. Learning style is a means by which individuals learn, and theories show that individuals learn in different ways.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between learning styles and visualization skills among interior design students. This study also examined influencing factors of visualization skills. These factors include year in current major, pre-professional experience, and cultural background. A convenience sample of 71 interior design students from the University of Minnesota who were enrolled in interior design courses during the fall quarter of 1997 completed a biographical data sheet, Kolb's Learning Style Inventory, and Isham's visualization test.

Results of this study revealed that there was no relationship between learning styles and visualization skills. However, year in current major was a significant influencing factor on visualization skills. The greatest increase in visual abilities was found between third and fourth years of the major. From this study, theoretical frameworks were designed to improve problem solving and visualization skills.
