Thesis (M.Comp.Sc.)--DalTech - Dalhousie University (Canada), 1999.
The objective of this research is to explore a new method to integrate multiple heterogeneous databases/data sources, by taking advantage of some of the latest Web technologies. A simple and practical solution is proposed in this thesis. Based on this solution, a multi-database system can be built from a collection of existing heterogeneous databases, where the same type of data is stored. The system provides a global interface for these databases, accepts a query from the user, then retrieves data from all databases in the system and displays the results together in a unified format.

The strategy adopted in this research is to integrate access to heterogeneous databases. The World Wide Web is used as the platform for the multi-database system built in this research, where each database can be accessed from the Web and such accesses are controlled by a system server. The architecture of the system is based on a three-tier model. All the integrating operations, such as query translation, database accessing and data transformation, are performed in the middle tier, which contains the system server.

The newly developed markup language, eXtensible Markup Language (XML), is employed as a tool to facilitate the integration of heterogeneous databases. It provides a unified structured view for the data with different formats in those databases. All the results retrieved are transformed into a XML document, which is saved in the system server. The resultant XML file can be further processed and displayed on the browser in a unified format according to an XSL stylesheet, which is designed for this data.

The Perl programming language was used to implement the prototype system. Perl has powerful syntactic tools and capabilities for handling textual expressions. Because both access to databases and processing of XML documents generate many textual processing tasks, Perl has advantages compared with other languages.
