Thesis (M.Sc.(Eng))--Queen's University at Kingston (Canada), 2002.
Spatial information drives most decision making processes in the mining industry, from mineral deposit exploration, through mine feasibility analysis, mine development and planning, to environmental planning, reclamation, and mine closure. Geographic Information Systems (GISs) are computerized tools developed to aid in the efficient collection, storage, management, retrieval, analysis and display of spatial data.

The application of a GIS to the processes of mine planning and development has been investigated using Autodesk's AutoCAD Land Desktop software package (release 2i). A materials management utility has been developed in Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) for AutoCAD. This utility enables the generation of mine block model drawings directly from database records, and provides an automated utility for selecting mining polygons, indicating the material's destination, and updating the associated database records.
