Director: Margret A. Appel.
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Ohio University, 2001.
This study examined stages of change and adherence to regular exercise over time in relation to personality factors, motives for exercise, barriers to exercise, and exercise preferences. The sample consists of 424 undergraduate students recruited from Psychology 101 classes at Ohio University. Participants completed questionnaires at the beginning of the academic quarter and approximately seven weeks later. Questionnaires included a demographic survey as well as measures of stage of change, exercise frequency, personality, motives for exercise, barriers to exercise, exercise preferences, exercise self-efficacy, and social desirability. The results indicate that higher stages of change are related to higher scores on the personality factor of Extraversion and the motives of fitness and health, and lower scores on the barriers of Lack of Motivation, Lack of Interest, and Shyness or Fear. In addition, a decrease in stage of change over time is related to an increase in Lack of Motivation. Lack of Motivation, self-efficacy, health, and Conscientiousness are significant in accounting for the variance in stage of stage, whereas Lack of Interest, health, Conscientiousness, and self-efficacy are significant in accounting for the variance in adherence. Both a higher stage of change and greater adherence are related to exercise that is competitive, high intensity, scheduled, and at a fitness club. The results are discussed in terms of using this information to create more effective stage-based interventions to facilitate the increase and maintenance of physical activity.
