Three rural United Methodist Churches confront the poverty that has resulted from years of economic decline in their Northern Appalachian communities. The paper notes the rise of the communities with the development of the railroad and the decline that results from depleted natural resources and a shifting global economy. The resulting struggles are placed in a theological perspective and a foundation is then laid for the Christian leadership in restoring a vision for these communities. A Christian Community Development Corporation sets about the task of hearing the felt needs of the community then working out a strategic plan to deal with the problems that are identified.
