This research examined the phenomenon of police suicide in the United States, and the training needs and requirements that have been recommended to address the problem. In particular, it investigated the opinions and perceptions of in-service police officers regarding police suicide and training needs.

In particular, it investigated the opinions and perceptions of in-service police officers regarding police suicide and training needs.
520 $a The research was descriptive and exploratory. A purposive sample of 68 in-service police officers who voluntarily attended a Police Suicide Awareness presentation were solicited for their opinions and perceptions. The data were collected using a pencil and paper survey questionnaire. Content analysis was the primary method used to examine the data. Descriptive statistics were used to supplement and enhance the content analysis.
520 $a The research findings suggested that police officers view police suicide as a serious problem, akin to officer survival issues. Police officers view police job stress as the primary contributing factor to police suicide, and they feel specific training programs and confidential treatment are needed to address the problem. The content of the evaluated training program met the needs identified by the officers.
