Distance education applicability to foundation studio art courses.
- 206 p.
Director: Dennis R. Dunklee.
Thesis (D.A.)--George Mason University, 2002.
This dissertation serves as a report on the state of, as well as a study for the applicability of, accredited distance education studio art courses (DESAC) in public and private community colleges, colleges, and universities throughout the U.S. Although distance education courses currently exist in most institutions of higher learning for history, math, literature, social studies, and the like, very few accredited distance education studio art courses are available to students at the time of this writing. Exceptions include a pilot program offered by the University of Idaho, and individual courses offered by a few colleges. The Idaho program is reviewed herein and compared to what could be incorporated into a college art curriculum.

Community colleges, colleges, and universities are overlooking an additional target—and income-generating—audience of students who would like to add distance education art courses to their transcripts. These include students with disabilities and special needs, as well as students who are interested in learning more about studio art techniques but are overburdened with trying to weave work, family, and other educational endeavors into their lives. Students who are unable to commute to the school because of rising transportation costs or because of poor public transportation would also be included in this target group, as well as art students who are simply looking for ways to increase the amount of time they spend in their own studios as opposed to commuting to and from classes. Distance education studio art courses may also free up valuable classroom space for institutions of higher learning who are feeling the affects of growing student populations yet are unable to expand their facilities because of budgetary constraints. This dissertation is intended to be a resource for all individuals interested in foundation distance education studio art courses for post-secondary schools, and for those who wish to know more about the potential that exists for the applicability of distance education to studio art courses.
