The purpose of this study was to determine what settings on a playground offer the greatest play value for children with disabilities, and effective methods for removing both physical and social barriers to those settings. This was accomplished through an exhaustive literature review, case studies of a wide variety of playgrounds, and a survey of the perceived value of different types of play activities.

It was determined that the play value of a playground setting is determined by the diversity and quality of play activities that the setting supports. The settings that support multiple activities, are flexible, and linked to complementary activities, are more valuable than those which do not. When playground settings are developed accordingly and accessible through the least limiting of means, they support developmentally appropriate, socially inclusive, free play opportunities for children with disabilities.
