Steinmetz, Lars Michael.
Genome-wide approaches to study gene function and natural phenotypic diversity.
- 171 p.
Adviser: Ronald W. Davis.
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Stanford University, 2002.
Sequencing projects are producing new gene sequences faster than biologists can discover their function. This thesis is concerned with three approaches to systematically study gene function and to understand how variations in gene function contribute to natural phenotypic diversity. Gene expression analysis provides a measure of mRNA transcript abundance for each gene, molecular barcode mapping provides a measure of the deletion phenotype of a gene product, and reciprocal hemizygosity analysis studies the contribution of gene sequence variants to phenotype.
