The history of African American women in positions of leadership in higher education in America is theoretically and physically incomplete. Though it is reasonable to suspect that race, interplayed with gender, might shape one's experiences, the leadership literature suffers from essentialist tendencies that reduce the complexity of its subjects of investigation, asking narrow questions and, thereby, formulating incomplete analyses of the lives of female leaders of color. Historical research has the potential to yield insights into the interrelated factors influencing leaders, yet only a few studies highlight the historical barriers that black women have confronted in their quest for administrative positions. Moreover, the absence of a treatise on the life of the first African American female senior college president marks this history as deficient.Subjects--Topical Terms:

In 1930, Mary Elizabeth Branch was part of a small but rising group of African American female leaders of institutions of higher learning and was not only an impressive administrator but also a staunch advocate and an unassuming activist for improving the social conditions and life chances of African Americans. Branch breathed new life into the deteriorating Tillotson College, and it was reborn as a modern institution of higher learning that moved forward a social agenda reflective of Branch's philosophies of community, education, freedom, and leadership. Through persistence, intellect, religious faith, and collaboration, Mary Elizabeth Branch left an imprint on history that has yet to be effectively documented. The current investigation sought to address this omission by creating an educational biography from an intersectional perspective that assembles and documents the significant life experiences of Branch, with particular emphasis on her presidential tenure.

The historical investigation has five research questions, regarding Branch's: (1) familial and educational backgrounds, (2) experiences of race and gender issues, (3) leadership style, (4) personal philosophy, and (5) off-campus relationships. Data were gathered through archival research and oral history interviews, and information was sorted according to time period, event, subject and, then, resorted by theme. The study contributes to the academy's knowledge and understanding of higher education leadership, both black and women's history, and African American women's endeavors to document their own historical stories.
