The Point Reyes Peninsula, California, has a long and interesting human history. From the early inhabitants of the region, the Coast Miwok, through Spanish missionaries, Mexican rancheros, and dairy farmers, and eventually designation as the Point Reyes National Seashore, the Peninsula has changed occupants and land use many times. It is the purpose of this research to describe the changes in land tenure and subsequent land use over the course of human occupation. With changes in land tenure and land use come landscape modifications, which are also addressed here. The Coast Miwok are believed to have co-evolved with the landscape at Point Reyes through a long history of modification. Mexican rancheros most likely made the largest contribution to landscape change as they constructed substantial buildings from local timber resources and grazed thousands of head of livestock on the peninsula. The dairy farms of the Gold Rush followed them, with further modifications. Then, in what was perhaps the final change in land tenancy, most of the Point Reyes Peninsula became part of the National Park Service. Historical changes are reflected in the landscape that is visible today.Subjects--Topical Terms:
