In this dissertation, I propose a way to liberate the Christian theological enterprise from "the problem of many authorities" and to unify the Christian church's disparate manifestations of apostolicity. First, I delineate foundationalist theology and its attempts to come to terms with the problem of many authorities. Second, I describe "nonfoundationalist" alternatives and how they too exhibit difficulty overcoming the problem of many authorities; though a promising exception is found in the so-called "confessionalist" approach that posits authoritative loci that correspond to the ways Christians historically have conceived the apostolic nature of the church. Third, I show how these conceptions of apostolicity manifested themselves historically. Fourth, I show how these apostolic exemplars correspond to confessionalism's authoritative loci. Fifth, I show that "narrative Christology" is viable christological alternative that overcomes the problem of many authorities and provides a way to unify Christianity's conception of apostolicity. The Christian theological enterprise is thereby given a means by which to justify its existence and fashion its agenda in a way that is both ecclesiologically responsive and epistemologically responsible.
