This study analyzes how angry rhetoric is used as an argumentative device in the autobiographical writings of James Baldwin, Gloria Anzaldua, John Edgar Wideman, and Richard Rodriguez. In ethnic autobiography angry rhetoric is often used to recreate injustices experienced by the author with the intention of inspiring praxis in the reader. This study suggests that readers consider that the anger they encounter when reading ethnic autobiography is not just venting, but emotion being used purposefully to encourage readers to fight the injustices these writers are highlighting. I offer a variety of rationales for how each of these authors uses angry rhetoric in their writings to inspire their readers toward civic action. Although this dissertation focuses on one major work by each author, I also analyze shorter works that further demonstrate each author's uses of anger. Additionally, I suggest that the teaching of ethnic American literature needs to be carried out using reader response practices and liberatory pedagogies. Teachers need to help students find the rhetorical purposes behind the anger expressed in ethnic autobiography.
