Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Washington, 1999.
The increased number of homeless women with children has become a national concern in the United States. Until recently, there has been a paucity of nursing research regarding this important subpopulation of homeless people. Little was known, about their experiences of becoming and being homeless from the perspective of these homeless mothers, that could form the basis for nursing interventions. The purposes of this inductive, exploratory study were to determine the self-perceived processes by which women with children became homeless and the strategies they used to cope with the experience of being homeless.

Spradley's (1979, 1980) Developmental Research Sequence Method formed the ethnographic approach to data collection and analysis. Data were collected through participant observation and ethnographic interviews in a mid-sized city in Washington State over a one year period in an emergency homeless shelter. Audio tapes and fieldnotes were transcribed and the Ethnograph computer program was used for data entry and analysis. The sample consisted of 20 women who had children but no partner with them in the shelter. There was little ethnic variation which reflects the city's demography.

Schematic outlines of relationships among domains and taxonomies of knowledge and themes derived from the data regarding the two aspects of the study were developed. Two major themes described mothers' perceptions of the processes of becoming homeless: Vulnerable for Homelessness and Losses. In many ways, mothers became vulnerable for homelessness through their life experiences as children and as adults. Their stories clearly indicated that homelessness was a process not an event. Two major themes described homeless mothers' coping strategies during shelter use: Survival and Hope for a Better Life. These mothers were not giving up; rather they were focusing their energies on reestablishing themselves in the larger community. The importance their children held for them was evident throughout the analysis. Finally, the relationship between two concepts, Learned Vulnerability and Being a Resilient Survivor was proposed. Population specific recommendations for practice, social policy, and intervention research were identified.
