In the last three decades international studies has become more sophisticated because economics and particularly the dynamics of capitalism have been incorporated into its discourse. However, efforts to formulate a theory of international political economy suffer from blindspots. These involve the absence of systematic explorations of major concepts used in analysis. A prime instance concerns the most important concept in international political economy, the division of labor.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Outside the factory the division of labor cannot be applied to national or international society except as a metaphor. However, the metaphorical usage of the division of labor is crucial. While the division of labor highlights the integrated and unified nature of the international political economy it also hides its social and political nature. This is because the tradition of using the division of labor as a metaphorical concept is tied to giving an economistic explanation for the origins of society. Thus, modern theorists using the concept are tied to regarding society as a set of narrow economic relations between egoistic individuals. The result is a conception of international political economy in which political and social relations are secondary, if not absent.

Using textual analysis this study traces the division of labor in modern political economy back to classical political economy, particularly Smith and Marx. A critique of Smith's and Marx's conceptualization of the division of labor is used to shed light on modern uses of the term, particularly in Wallerstein. It is demonstrated that modern ambiguities inherent in the term originate in the insecure foundations of classical theories.

The critique of the division of labor has implications for the theory of international political economy. It redresses the imbalance between economy and society and posits the importance of political explanations. By replacing its economism with social and political foundations, this study is a first step towards reformulating the theory of international political economy.
