Ecological and behavioral assessments sought to identify ecological factors (e.g. forest structure, floral composition, availability of food) that determine macaque population dynamics, feeding and ranging behavior, and habitat preference. Over 2,750 observation hours of systematic scan and ad libitum data were collected to assess the relationship between habitat quality and home range size, group size, age/sex composition, and feeding behavior. In comparison to groups occupying primary forests, groups occupying severely disturbed habitats (i.e. a mosaic of secondary forests, scrub forests, regenerating gardens, and alang-alang grassland) have significantly longer and wider range than groups in less disturbed habitats, have smaller group size and core areas, consume a larger proportion of arthropods, and show a decreased level of social behaviour.

Population surveys obtained estimates on macaque populations at Manembonembo Nature Reserve, Tangkoko Nature Reserve, and Manado Tua island in Bunaken Marine National Park, in North Sulawesi, Indonesia. Population estimates show a continuous decline from estimates reported by the MacKinnons in the late 1970s and by Sugardjito and colleagues in the late 1980s. Moreover, the macaque population at Manembonembo showed a continuous decline during the study. In addition, fewer groups were encountered and the average group size decreased.

Since the people of North Sulawesi hunt and consume crested black macaques on a regular basis, I examined the effects of hunting by carrying out: (1) household surveys to examine harvest rates; and (2) macaque population surveys. Wild meat represents a high percentage of total meat consumption--as high as 37% in some villages. Although macaque harvests represent less than 1% of total wild game harvests, the present harvest rate of macaques is not sustainable. Results from household surveys reveal that hunting is the primary contributing factor to macaque declines leading to reduced densities and smaller groups. And because of their reproductive characteristics (i.e. long gestation period, long interbirth interval, and late age of first reproduction for females), crested black macaques are not able to rebound from hunting pressures.
