An aluminum mold having three cylindrical shaped cavities was used. Each cavity was fabricated of the same length of 101.6 mm and different diameters of 6.35, 7.94 and 9.53 mm. A special channel was machined at the end of each cavity and was extended to the edge of the cavity plate in order to insert a thermocouple for temperature readings. Co-axially inserted thermocouples were used to obtain data of the melt temperature during the injection and cooling phases of the molding cycle. The data acquisition setup converted the analog output from thermocouple in to a digital signal and thus thermal diffusivity data were calculated from the collected signal output.

The results of this study show that the thermal diffusivity obtained from the experimental setup is in agreement with the values of thermal diffusivity obtained by other methods. The concept and objective of this study prove the novel approach of experimentation. This study is based on a follow up of experimental work recommended in the graduate thesis of Mr. Borris Serebrinikov.
