This dissertation explores the “Gryon s'egrillonne” festival cycle, a series of cultural displays staged each summer in the tourist village of Gryon, Switzerland. It pays particular attention to tropes dichotomizing rural and urban symbols, which drive outsiders' consumption of Gryon's indigenous scenery and culture (especially as they are portrayed in the festival cycle). These same symbols and images also form the backdrop against which Gryon's residents construct their own notions of local and national identity.

Each chapter considers tropes from the Gryon s'egrillonne festival cycle in conjunction with adaptations to Gryon's ecological setting, with changing perceptions of Alpine environments and populations, or with issues of identity. Chapter II offers a description of Gryon, of the present form of the Gryon s'egrillonne festivals and of the temporal and spatial locales crucial to the celebrations. Chapter III examines the agro-pastoralism celebrated in the festivals and the historical processes that lead Gryon to its particular ecological adaptation. Chapter IV looks at the role of rural tropes in the development of nationalism and tourism in the area around Gryon. It also explores Gryon's role as a symbol of Swiss nationalism. Chapter V provides an exploration of the various categories of people who participate in Gryon s'egrillonne and the social tensions between them that are manifest in the festivals. Chapter VI looks at the voluntary associations through which village life and the Gryon s'egrillonne festivals are organized. The final chapter explores the urban/rural dichotomy that forms the crux of the cycle's symbolic meaning. It argues that the same tropes of rurality that attract tourists, nationalists, and other outsiders to Gryon and to its cultural displays and that create tensions between the various categories of people living in the village have also constrained social scientists working on issues of tourism, nationalism, and cultural authenticity in Europe.
