Child support is a payment that flows from a non-custodial parent to a custodial parent for support of their children. State laws vary and the required payments can be substantial. Consequently, child support rules have the potential to alter behavior. The essays in my dissertation examine the effects of child support policies on household behavior.

520 $a In Chapter 1, I develop a simple model of child support and divorce or separation, highlighting the specific conditions that must be true for difference in payments to affect the divorce decision. Empirical results indicate that stronger child support policies result in fewer divorces. This effect is a result of a state's child support guidelines and not enforcement measures.
520 $a In Chapter 2, I explore how differences in child support guidelines affect the fertility decisions of never married fathers. I find that differences in child support measures have no significant effect on a never married man's decision to have his first child out of wedlock.
520 $a In Chapter 3, we look at how differences in child support guideline implementation affect the labor supply decision of mothers prior to divorce. In Percentage of Income states, the child support order depends only on the income of the non-custodial parent. In Income Shares and Melson Formula states, the child support order depends on the income of both parents. We find that mothers in Percentage of Income states work less than other states in the years leading up to divorce.
