Recent spirituality research has sought to develop spirituality measures that empirically substantiate spirituality as a unique construct independent of established personality constructs. One such measure is Sanctification, a psychological process through which people perceive aspects of life to possess spiritual character and significance. Over the last decade, empirical research on sanctification has indicated that this construct can further our understanding of positive outcomes in areas of human functioning such as marriage, parenting, and sexual activity, when people sanctify these activities. This study represents the first quantitative examination of Sanctification of Work with work-related outcomes.

The study first examined if the Sanctification of Work contributed unique variance after controlling for Spirituality, Religiosity, Psychological Safety, Personality, and Demographic variables in the prediction of Job Satisfaction, Turnover Intention, Organizational Commitment, and Psychological Distress. Second, this study assessed if Spirituality and/or Religiosity moderated the relationship of the Sanctification of Work to the work-related outcomes. The participants, 350 women and 477 men who worked in the field of education at religiously affiliated institutions, completed an online survey that was distributed to 65 middle and secondary schools across the continental United States. The majority of the sample was married (64%), had children (61%), were Catholic (83%) and ranged in age between 40 to 60 years of age (52%). The measures for the predictors were: Sanctification of Work Scale (Walker, 2007), Duke Religiosity Index (Koenig, Meador, & Parkerson, 1997), Aspires Scale-Spiritual Transcendence Scale Short Form (Piedmont, 1999), Psychological Safety Scale (May, Gilson, & Harter, 2004), The Big Five Inventory (John, 1990), and a demographic questionnaire. The measures for the work-related outcomes were: Job Satisfaction Scale (McNichols, Stahl, & Manley, 1978), Turnover Intention Scale (Ostroff & Kozlowski, 1992), Organizational Commitment Scale (Mowday, Steers, & Porter, 1979), and Psychological Distress-General Health Questionnaire (Goldberg & Hiller, 1979).

The results indicated that the Sanctification of Work was a significant predictor of Job Satisfaction, Turnover Intention, and Organizational Commitment after controlling for Spirituality, Religiosity, Personality, Psychological Safety, and Demographic variables. However, the Sanctification of Work did not predict Psychological Distress. The findings of the study identified that the Sanctification of Work predicted the largest amount of variance in Job Satisfaction after controlling for the other predictors. An incremental validity analysis determined that Spirituality and Religiosity did not moderate the relationship of the Sanctification of Work to the work-related outcomes. The results supported the validity of the Sanctification of Work as an independent construct that assesses spirituality's relationship to work-related outcomes. The study's findings represent a significant advance of sanctification research into a new domain of psychosocial functioning: work. The current study was the first investigation in sanctification research to demonstrate predictive properties of a sanctification construct after controlling for Personality. The results offer additional empirical evidence for the validity of sanctification constructs, because this was the first sanctification study to utilize a national sample. The findings suggest that the Sanctification of Work can be a resource for clinicians and clients in assessing the role of spirituality in work-related issues, such as career decisions or coping skills.
