Recent empirical investigations of Spanish broad focus (BF) declaratives have shown a consistent pitch accent pattern in which prenuclear tonal peaks are realized immediately following the stressed syllable, a phenomenon known as peak displacement. While this pattern is generally attributed to many varieties of Spanish, Buenos Aires (BA) Spanish is unique in that in BF declaratives, peaks are normally realized within the stressed syllable, known as early alignment.

In my study of BA Spanish, I used both scripted as well as spontaneous speech corpora to find instances of early alignment in words realized in narrow focus (NF) as well as in regular BF declaratives. For the laboratory study, I analyzed a corpus of 44 sentences in which two participants read BF declaratives then answered questions designed to elicit words in NF. For the first speaker, 35% of BF declaratives were realized in early alignment, compared to 29% for the second speaker. Given that early alignment is not infrequent in BA Spanish declaratives, it follows that the realization of tonal peaks within the stressed syllable is an unlikely strategy for conveying NF since identical tonal alignment would render BF and NF declaratives non-distinct. Results suggest that in laboratory speech, duration and intensity of the stressed syllable/vowel were the most significant strategies for conveying NF. Thus, EA is less likely to be employed in conveying NF in a dialect that already shows a significant amount of EA in BF declaratives.

My study of spontaneous speech included four types of elicitation tasks involving the same two participants. Three hypotheses were explored: (1) the correlation between peak type (peak displacement vs. early alignment) and type of speech elicitation task; (2) the relationship between peak type and the duration of the stressed vowel; and (3) the relationship between peak type and peak height. Overall, a high percentage of early alignment was found in BF declaratives, with a robust 70% of observed cases. Results for hypothesis I show a significant correlation between task and peak type. For hypothesis2, there was a strong correlation between duration of the stressed vowel and peak type (i.e., longer vowels in words showing early alignment). For hypothesis3, there was no general relationship between peak height and peak type, but task-specific effects were found (i.e., higher peaks in early alignment for some tasks compared to others).
