Neonaticide: A cross-disciplinary approach.
- 47 p.
Adviser: Karen Rosenberg.
Thesis (M.A.)--University of Delaware, 2008.
In 1970, the psychiatrist Phillip Resnick used the term "neonaticide" to mean the killing of a newborn within twenty-four hours of birth (Resnick 1970, 325), separating this phenomenon from the much more inclusive concept of infanticide. Subsequently, various scholars have investigated different aspects of the subject. It is a subject that stirs strong opinions and engages deeply held beliefs, but the present study adopts a somewhat dispassionate approach, using words like "behavior" and "event" instead of words like "murder" or "tragedy" where the use of those words indicates one of several possible defensible opinions or beliefs. Using evidence from a variety of sources, this paper presents a multi-dimensional representation of neonaticide and shows how understanding its connections across time, cultures, and species can inform ethical decision-making.
