The present study investigated morphological differences indicative of ancestry using the distal femora of European and African Americans. Seven linear measurements were used to evaluate potential shape differences between these populations. Results from discriminant analyses in a preliminary study suggested that biepicondylar breadth and medial and lateral condyle lengths were relatively larger in African Americans, while anteroposterior diameter was relatively larger in European Americans. Results of discriminant analyses in a subsequent (primary) study differed from the results obtained in the preliminary study. Results from the primary study indicated that medial and lateral condyle lengths were relatively larger in African Americans, while biepicondylar breadth was relatively larger in European Americans (a reversal of trends). Comparison of pooled-sex versus male-only and female-only ancestry-specific discriminant analyses showed correct classification rates that were higher among males than females.

Further analyses showed there to be notable differences between the two skeletal collections utilized in the primary study (University of Chicago Collection at SIUC and William M. Bass Donated Skeletal Collection). The reason for this unexpected result is presently unknown; however the author suggests two hypotheses for the source of this variation. First, should the majority of individuals that comprise the University of Chicago Collection be of European American ancestry, the collection may appear morphologically different from the William M. Bass Donated Skeletal Collection, from which a sample of equal numbers of African and European Americans was obtained. A second and more likely interpretation stems from secular change to the morphology of distal femora that may have occurred during the approximate 70 years that separate the two collections. If significant secular change has taken place in the distal femora of Americans, it calls into question how physical and forensic anthropologists develop accurate standards for estimating aspects of the biological profile: age-at-death, sex, ancestry and stature. Therefore, the widely-used Terry and Hamann-Todd collections, both roughly contemporaneous with the University of Chicago Collection, may not be appropriate resources on which to develop and test these standards. Results from the present analyses suggest that more contemporary collections such as the William M. Bass Donated Skeletal Collection may, at least in modern forensic contexts, be more representative of modern American skeletal morphology. Future prospective analyses utilizing samples from the Terry and/or Hamann-Todd Collections will further address this issue of sample representativeness.
