Thesis (Psy.D.)--Capella University, 2009.
This qualitative research study explored the question "What is the lived experience of couples when one partner suffers from breast cancer disease?" The phenomenological research model was used as the method of investigation. Data were collected from 11 couples during open-ended interviews that were audio-recorded and transcribed. The impact of breast cancer on degree of closeness in the relationship, level of communication, and physical intimacy were addressed in this study. The subject of this qualitative study was to understand the dynamic of how couples experienced breast cancer in their relationship, and how they created meaning of their experience. Three dominant themes emerged from the analysis, including impact of diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer on the couple relationship, level of communication, and physical intimacy. This research attempted to determine if there were changes in communication, marital quality, and satisfaction as the couple experienced breast cancer of one partner, and to discover if the emotional support of a significant other could bring benefits for the breast cancer patient. The data from this study confirmed that as a result of the illness, all couples experienced changes in comunication, intimacy, and on degree of closeness in the relationship. Overall, all couples reported changes in their everyday household life. They believed in taking an active role in their health care. Patterns of role behavior, and ways the couple interacted together at home were altered. Breast cancer had an impact on patient functioning, patient psychosocial adjustment, and husband/partner adjustment. Implications for mental health and medical care providers are addressed.
