Relative earnings play an important role in theories of the family. It is used as a measure of economic (in)dependence as well as the degree of role specialization within the family. Despite its central importance, few studies have evaluated the stability of relative earnings relationships over the duration of marriage or how the stability of relative earnings has changed over time. This dissertation uses data from the 1968-1997 waves of the Panel Study of Income Dynamics and life table methods to estimate the stability of different relative earnings relationships over the duration of marriage and how the stability of these relative earnings relationships has changed over time. Results show that there is considerable instability in relative earnings over the duration of marriage. In 1969, husband sole-earner earnings relationships were the most stable, while those in which the wife earned 40% or more of the couple's earnings were the least stable. Over time, husband sole-earner earnings relationships became less stable, while other dual-earner earnings relationships became more stable, leading to smaller differences across relative earnings relationships. In addition, results from analyses that followed couples from the first year of marriage shows that previous research relying on cross-sectional samples of marriages have underestimated the degree of instability in relative earnings that couples experience over the duration of their marriages.

These changes in the stability of relative earnings occurred during a period of dramatic social, legal, and economic changes that improved women's economic position in society and affected the ways in which couples structure their relative earnings relationships. An examination of differences in relative earnings stability by couples' demographic characteristics suggest that changes over time in the stability of relative earnings would have been more dramatic if changes in the demographic composition of married couples had not occurred. These analyses also provide evidence that changes in the stability of relative earnings were affected not only by improvements in women's economic position, but also by the declining economic circumstances of less-educated men and changes in social norms that favor dual-earner status. The implications of these findings for family research are discussed.
