In Le Clezio's fiction, travel is a predominant theme. At the same time, travel writing has been the subject of severe criticism ever since the beginning of the 20th century. This paradox is the starting point of this study, which explores Le Clezio's travel writing in order to examine both its relation to literary traditions and its specificity.

Through textual readings of three important works, Le livre des fuites (1969), Le chercheur d'or (1985) and La quarantaine (1995), Le Clezio's writing about travel is studied in three ways. The thematic approach focuses on the imaginary of space in the novels and on the itineraries of the main characters. The symbolic approach looks at Le Clezio's geographical representations from a mythocritical perspective. The poetic approach, finally, examines the stylistic and narrative characteristics of Le Clezio's texts, and pays attention to aspects of intertextuality and rewriting practices.

In the course of his career as a writer, Le Clezio's travel writing seems to have developed in three phases. The first period was characterised by severe (auto)critical reflection that almost denies the possibility of travel writing and in which the idea of adventure was highly problematic. In a second phase, the author called on a variety of myths to reinvent travel fiction and give a new elan to the adventurous explorations of his main characters. In the third phase, however, the author seems to equate travel with endless wandering, which results in adventure leading to exhaustion.

Throughout these three phases there is a constant that characterises Le Clezio's writing: in his books, travel ultimately involves loss. The nomadic thought in Le Clezio's fiction has a melancholy undertone, which reflects Michel de Certeau's understanding of the nomad. The various itineraries of the heroes are not just a joyful way of living the plurality of today's world, but endless attempts to attain a unique place that is forever beyond reach. In this perspective, creative writing appears as a manner to satisfy this unfulfilled desire: page after page, the prose of Le Clezio attempts to fill this void with the poetry of its words.
