Thesis (M.A.)--Baylor University, 2001.
The intent of this thesis is to show that US involvement in the 1963 coup in South Vietnam occurred as a result of the shift in power from President Ngo Dinh Diem to his brother and political counselor Ngo Dinh Nhu. Nhu began to exercise more power in the government in 1962 when Diem appointed him to administer the strategic hamlet program. Not until Nhu's brutal pagoda raids during the Buddhist crisis of 1963 did the US acknowledge Nhu had seriously failed with the hamlet program as well. Also at this time, reports surfaced that Nhu was negotiating for peace with North Vietnam, prompting the US to fear a Communist takeover. Finally, negative press coverage regarding Nhu's oppressive use of power caused the Kennedy administration to support a coup against the Diem government as its only option to rid the government of Nhu.
