This is an explorative study using a descriptive, narrative-approach to relate the historical language controversy in the Philippines. A review of the subjective literature determined that a dilemma was existing for more than a century regarding this language controversy wherein the central issues were a consequence and result of the evolution of English. Thus, the methodology was of a historical chronology investigating the hypothesis-problem that a language dilemma exists by asking three questions: (1) How English evolved, (2) What is the nature of the dilemma, and (3) Will the dilemma persist. The significance of such a study is in its "pulling together" all the existing, nonempirical literature; this extensive bibliography, compiled in the United States and the Philippines, dates from pre-colonial times to 1997. The study found that answers to the controversy-dilemma pointed in the different directions of English, Filipino, Bilingualism, and Multi-Lingualism as medium of instruction in Philippine education.
