Injuries are a growing problem in sport and recreation. While the causal factors in sports injuries are most likely to be physical and biomechanical, a substantial body of literature has focused on the role of psychosocial variables in relation to injury incidence. The stress-injury theory developed by Williams and Andersen (1998), which illustrates the relationship between life stress, personality, coping, and injury, is the dominant model used for injury psychology research. One of the primary personality variables, anxiety, has been proven to be a factor that increases injury vulnerability. However, anxiety has yet to be studied as an injury risk factor in the sport of triathlon.

Accurate and representative data about the nature, frequency, and severity of triathlon injury is limited. Using a cross-sectional design, this descriptive study examined the nature and scope of injury, and the association between sport injury anxiety and injury severity and frequency among a convenience sample of 1033 triathletes who raced the 2007 New York City Triathlon. Results indicated that the majority of injury experience entailed overuse injuries sustained while running, and lower body parts were the most affected anatomical injury sites. Over half of the sample reported experiencing at least one injury over the previous year. Triathlon experience was not related to injury.

Compared with those who reported lower levels of sport injury anxiety, triathletes who reported higher levels of sport injury anxiety also reported higher levels of injury severity and a greater number of injuries in the past 12 months. Age and days missed due to injury were positively associated with injury severity. Gender was significantly related to sport injury anxiety, with females reporting higher levels of sport injury anxiety, but gender was not associated with injury severity or frequency. Type of injury (acute versus overuse) and when an injury occurred was associated with injury severity and frequency. Specifically, those with acute injuries reported more severe injuries and less number of injuries than those with overuse injuries. Also, a shorter time lapse since the most recent injury occurrence was associated to increased reported severity and number of injuries.
