Academic librarians are increasingly tasked with the responsibility of developing and teaching information literacy at their institutions. This study examined information literacy instruction and described the teaching roles at four United States service academy libraries. This study was designed to answer the question: To what extent are service academy libraries promoting and providing information literacy instruction? In addition, librarians also reported on their other teaching activities and their perception of their teaching abilities. An eight question online survey was administered to 27 academic librarians. Interviews were conducted in person between the researcher and representative librarians from each of the academy libraries. Findings suggest that information literacy instruction varies among all the service academies, but the overall extent of it was relatively low. The most important conclusions of this study may be summed up as follows: (a) service academy librarians have a teaching role at their academies, (b) this teaching role is important to facilitating lifelong learning, (c) their teaching role needs to be better defined, and (d) information literacy instruction needs more development in terms of training and programming. Recommendations for practice would be to have more education and training for librarians to enhance their teaching skills and to develop stronger relationships with between librarians and faculty.
