Thesis (D.Min.)--The Catholic University of America, 2009.
With 40% of US Catholics age 18-40, and 5 million enrolled in higher education, Campus Ministry plays a vital role in young adult faith formation. Two national surveys point to the need for new direction. In 2001, the National Study of Youth and Religion surveyed 3370 young people. In 2004, the Higher Education research Institute at UCLA surveyed 112,232 students at 236 US colleges. Both surveys revealed high levels of spiritual interest and involvement among today's youth.

Yet, the highest group of respondents in each survey, Catholic youth, scored below average than their Protestant peers in religious understanding, engagement and commitment. This Project in Ministry designed, piloted, and evaluated a new model of spiritual direction for college students using a personal training, life coaching framework.

As a short-term, interactive, and intensive process, Spiritual Life Coaching can assist Catholic college students to become active learners in knowing and practicing their faith. By utilizing documents of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops, the UCLA and NSYR surveys, spiritual direction theory and practice, and the evolving nature of personal training and life coaching, this dissertation project established a theoretical base for Spiritual Life Coaching.

Two test groups were convened. Participants were self-identified Catholic student leaders at Niagara University, drawn equally between genders. Groups ran in two phases with six participants, meeting in group for first and last sessions, with three individual sessions between coach and candidate, who prioritized learning needs.

Participants completed pre/post questionnaires to assess their attitude toward the process, whether the program was helpful, and if they had grown in knowledge and practice of their faith. Participants evaluated the materials used, the process, and the coach's effectiveness.

The highly favorable evaluative feedback of both groups confirmed that this project did contribute to young adult faith formation in the Church by creating a model for campus ministers to utilize in student faith development, lay leadership skills and provided a tangible way for Catholic college students to enliven their faith and their relationship with Christ and the Church.
