With the intent of improving music instruction, the purpose of this research was to contribute to an understanding of music acquisition. The problem of this study is to investigate the effect of presentation procedure of songs, with or without text, on pitch accuracy in singers with high and low music aptitude. Third-grade populations of two schools served as participants for the study. The investigator was the instructor for both schools for a ten-week period.

Participants at each school were assigned to one of four song presentation procedures. Tonal and Rhythm Subtests of Gordon's Intermediate Measures of Music Aptitude were administered to all participants. All groups learned the same song repertoire following the assigned procedure to acclimate students to the presentation sequence. Individuals were audio-tape-recorded singing a final criterion song. Performances were evaluated by trained judges using two rating scales to measure pitch accuracy. Both rating scales may be effective measures to evaluate children's vocal accuracy and ability.

Analyses of Variance were conducted to examine differences between group accuracy-score means. Planned comparisons allowed examination of effects of singing with text or neutral syllables, and songs presented whole or by phrase, on pitch accuracy. Participants who learned whole songs with text sang most accurately, but the difference was not statistically significant.

Further effects of singing with text or neutral syllables, and songs presented whole or by phrase, were examined relative to participants' high or low tonal aptitude. Participants' IMMA Tonal Subtest scores had a significant effect (p = .002) on singing accuracy scores. Presentation method and the interaction between aptitude and presentation method did not have a significant effect on singing accuracy.
