The purpose of this research was to explore the relationships between life and work in music therapy by examining the lives and work of two pioneering improvisational music therapists, Clive Robbins and Mary Priestley. The life experiences of both Clive Robbins and Mary Priestley were told to the researcher through conversations. Each tells of significant experiences throughout his/her life including circumstances around his/her birth, family dynamics, childhood memories, schooling, significant relationships, his/her introduction to music therapy and the development of his/her respective models of music therapy, creative music therapy and analytical music therapy.

The work of both music therapists was then described in terms of clinical uses, goals and treatment procedures. The primary texts of each were then analyzed further in order to delineate the underlying philosophical premises of their respective approaches to music therapy. The focus of this examination centered around issues indigenous to theories of therapy, such as, what concept of health or wellness was implied, what constitutes pathology, what the dynamics of therapy include and how the process of therapy is conceptualized.

Experiences of being a client in each model of music therapy are described in detail by the researcher which include the musical and verbal themes explored, the feelings that were aroused, the roles taken by the therapist and the client, the development of the therapeutic relationship, and the stages of therapeutic change.

Relationships between the biographical material, the material gathered from the texts of each music therapist, and the experiences of the researcher as client were described. For Mary Priestley these centered around themes concerned with energy, understanding, expectations, relationships and fulfillment. For Clive Robbins these centered around themes concerned with relationships, mastery, independence and freedom.
