The purpose of this investigation was to compare the effectiveness of presenting modules of opera instruction through video recordings with audio recordings in terms of producing cognitive achievement, increasing positive attitudes, and improving the commitment of individuals to attend live opera performances.

In three consecutive instruction modules the evolution of opera was traced chronologically. The experimental group watched and listened to opera performances, laser discs recordings with subtitles, which were projected onto a large screen. The control group listened only to the audio portion of the same performances and was provided with identical translations of the opera texts. Both groups were given a Musical Knowledge Inventory, a Music Attitude Inventory, and an Opera Experience Questionnaire as pre- and post-instruction measurement tools. In addition, an essay question on an opera aria was included on the mid-term examination to measure the subjects' verbal ability in describing their aural understandings of the recorded excerpt.

The results of this study indicate that both the audio with translations and the audio-video approaches to teaching opera are effective methods of instruction. The control group and the experimental group reached similar cognitive gains. The results of the essay question were inconclusive.

The investigation of the positive attitude increase as a result of the study was apparent. The subjects in the control group showed a slightly higher positive attitude increase than did those in the experimental group. On the other hand, the composite mean score of the experimental group for those questions directly or inferentially related to opera, changed more favorably than that of the control group.

Subjects of the experimental group indicated their decisions regarding future attendance at opera performances were influenced by watching the videos in class. The influence was significantly higher in the experimental group than in the control group (p $\le$.009).
