With the capabilities such as individual instruction and instant feedback, the computer has been regarded as an ideal platform for practice and drill. Since at the beginner's level, efficient and accurate practice is important in learning music fundamentals, the majority of current music software for the instruction of music fundamentals is designed as a practice-and-drill tool. However, realizing that the music learning should not be limited to the acquisition of musical facts and musical skills, more and more music educators raise questions such as: Is the practice-and-drill approach adequate in helping students develop higher-order thinking (e.g., creative thinking) in music?Subjects--Topical Terms:

In young children's musical development, sound exploration is an important musical experience to them. Many music educators see it as either the pre-activity or the early stage of the development of creativity in music. Thus, a music instructional software intended for young children should involve them with the opportunity of sound exploration. The purpose of this dissertation project is to develop and evaluate a music instructional program, "My Favorite Melodies." This program is designed to provide a computer learning environment which allows young children not only to develop the skill of discriminating among diverse musical examples but also to explore sounds by manipulating the music element (i.e., pitch) freely.

In addition, according to Piaget's stage theory, young children learn through senses. Therefore, by using HyperCard, a computer-based multimedia authoring tool, "My Favorite Melodies" intends to provide a multisensory learning environment. That is, through the incorporation of multi-type of media formats including text, sound, graphics, animation and speech, this program allows young children to learn through visual, auditory and kinesthetic senses simultaneously.

The formative evaluation for this study consisted of a field test and interviews. The observation of students' behaviors reflecting their thinking process and sound exploration is the emphasis of the field test. To avoid the personal subjectivity which may occur in the observation, five subject-matter experts were interviewed and provided information for the further revisions of this music software.
