Subjects were first-grade children in three self-contained classrooms in an elementary school (N = 54). Intact groups were randomly assigned to one of three treatments: tactile/kinesthetic-auditory, auditory-auditory, and visual-auditory. Treatment consisted of 15 lessons over six weeks with each group receiving rhythmic instruction using activities in the assigned modality. Rhythmic instruction emphasized quarter notes, paired eighth notes, quarter rests, and half notes.

The pretest-posttest control-group design was used in the study. The Music Modality Preference Test for Children (MMPTC) was administered before and after treatment and the Rhythm Test (RT) was given as a posttest only. The MMPTC was designed to assess modality preferences for rhythmic activities in a forced-choice format, yielding ipsative scores for the various modalities. Items in each of the three modalities were incorporated in the RT to determine rhythmic achievement. Auditory items were composed of a same/different discrimination task; visual items required subjects to match icons with aural stimuli; and tactile/kinesthetic items sought echo playing responses on the guiro. All tests were constructed by the investigator who administered them to each child individually.

At the end of instruction, results indicate that the visual treatment group scored significantly higher on preference for the visual modality (

<$.05) than the other two treatment groups. The visual instructional groups also scored significantly higher on the RT than the other two instructional groups (

<$.05), and on the RT visual subtest than the auditory group (

<$.05). The effects of preference condition and gender were found to be not significant.
