The growing concerns over anthropogenic climate change and, more recently, energy security, is increasing interest in local, renewable energy sources which are also low in their carbon-intensity. Bioenergy, or energy from biomass sources, is an example of such an energy source. One particularly attractive bioenergy option is logging residues, the leftovers from the conventional forest industry.

However, biomass from logging residues is a complex resource having a low-energy density constraining its transportation distances. It is also subject to spatial and temporal variations due to the forest cover growth and conventional forest products demand. For evaluating the resource and optimal locating and sizing of the facilities while maintaining biomass supplies efficient and reliable, this thesis designs, develops, and implements BioLR-DSS, a decision support system for bioenergy from logging residues. The input requirements and algorithms for BioLR-DSS are described and its capabilities are demonstrated in a case study for western Nova Scotia.
