As the world moves toward a more global economy, organizations of every ilk are challenged to address the matter of retaining a diverse workforce. Part of this challenge undoubtedly includes supporting the rise of Black women in the workplace. For as far back as the earliest Africans who landed on the shores of these United States, Black women have been making their mark as leaders in extraordinary ways. Yet, the phenomenon of Black female leadership is one that has virtually gone undocumented in the literature.

520 $a This dissertation highlights commonalities in the way executives who are African-American and female interpret their experiences. They draw from their faith, their relationships, and their understanding of their racial identity in making meaning of their world, while delivering results in stellar ways. In many ways these women are quite like other leaders in the executive ranks; however, what is different and therefore unique is the meaning that these African-American executive women derive from their experiences.
520 $a This research points out implications for practitioners who desire a more inclusive leadership development program; for organizations that seek to understand how their practices consciously or unwittingly affect Black women in their organization; and for other individuals who seek help in making sense of their experiences.
