This thesis investigates the influence of Yuan Sanqu on the formation in terms of musical structure, literary features, and spread of Yuan Zaju drama, illustrated by specific works. It is proved that Yuan Sanqu emerged prior to Yuan Zaju, and conventionalizes to both the musical characters of Yuan Zaju, whose mainbody song-sequence derives from the form of scattered song-suites of Yuan Sanqu, and the literary qualities of Yuan Zaju, inherited the expressive technique and lyrical style from Yuan Sanqu. Moreover, Yuan Sanqu writers contribute to spread Yuan Zaju through their fame and certain works.
