While sociologists and philosophers unfold nature of the modern city and its effect on urban life through the examination of empirical reality, writers represent their remarkable insight of similar interest in literary works. Wang Anyi is one of the most influential and innovative writers in contemporary China. Her characters find their life values delineated against the backdrop of Shanghai. This dissertation is to analyze the artistic value of the city in Wang Anyi's novels from a comparative perspective.

The dissertation analyzes four themes in relation to the city: the architecture, the everyday life, the countryside and time. At the beginning of each chapter, I have surveyed each theme in Western and Chinese literary criticism in order to provide a comparative context. The dissertation contains five chapters.

Chapter One investigates the physical significance of the city in The Song of Everlasting Sorrow. The architecture---windows, rooms, buildings and houses---reconstructs the image of the city in an interactive process between the observer and the observed.

Chapter Two examines the multiple images of Shanghai through the characters' diverse responses to the urban life in Fu Ping. The polyphonic voices and images of the city are realized through the artistic transformation of the trivial daily lives, and a shifting narrative perspective from one character to another in terms of one's personal experience.

Chapter Three studies how a child's perspective is acquired and the artistic effect it has achieved in presenting the contradiction of modernization in the countryside. In Growing Red Water Chestnuts on the Top and Planting Lotus Roots at the Bottom, the child's perspective is used as a literary technique to present a changing rural society and its impact on people.

Chapter Four focuses on the spatial dimension of time, history and memory in relation to the city by analyzing the multiplicity of private temporalities and spaces that combine in the novel adding up to an alternative social time. Time, in Fact and Fiction, is experienced as discontinuity, incoherence, and fragmentation through the co-existence of disjunctive times and spaces.

In the last chapter, I have studied the city in Virginia Woolf s novels from the same perspectives adopted in the previous four chapters. As two dominant female writers in Chinese and British literary history, Wang and Woolf share similar ideas and writing devices in discovering the essence of their worlds.
