Thesis (Ph.D.)--New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, 2008.
The purpose of this dissertation was to analyze textbooks in required introductory foundations and educational administration courses taught in the Christian education divisions at the six Southern Baptist seminaries---Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary, Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary---to determine the extent to which the selected textbooks incorporated theological foundations in their content. Twenty-four textbooks were examined. Research was conducted using a theological content analysis instrument based upon Robert W. Pazmino's theory of Christian education. The instrument was developed by the researcher from a detailed examination of Pazmino's writings. The instrument was validated by Pazmino as being appropriate in the light of his writings.

The content analysis of the selected textbooks revealed that biblical authority and the necessity of conversion were the most prevalent theological distinctives, whereas expressions of fundamental doctrines related to the redemptive work of Christ were less evident. Additionally, spirituality was emphasized for personal growth but not with respect to addressing social concerns. Of Pazmino's educational tasks, kerygma and koinonia were heavily emphasized, diakonia was emphasized to a lesser extent, and propheteia was seldom addressed. Finally, educational connections with traditional theological loci were evident as related to sin and salvation, the church and teaching, and the Holy Spirit and teaching. Conversely, connections were deficient with respect to the doctrines of the Trinity and eschatology.

The findings of the research suggests several implications. The research reinforces the conviction of evangelical Christian educators that theology should be seen as the foundation for Christian education and the lens through which educational systems should be examined. Additionally, the results imply a need for a more detailed theology of Christian education to be expressed in Christian education textbooks, giving more attention to the importance of the doctrines of the Trinity and eschatology for Christian education. Moreover, Christian education textbooks should affirm social action as an appropriate task of Christian education without neglecting the biblical and evangelistic ground for such work.
