This study defines fundamental issues in art appreciation. Beginning with a history of art appreciation, and then analyzing six currently used art appreciation textbooks, the study focuses on what appreciation is, what it is of, what are the knowledge requirements, what methods enhance it, where it takes place, and its value.Subjects--Topical Terms:

This study defines fundamental issues in art appreciation. Beginning with a history of art appreciation, and then analyzing six currently used art appreciation textbooks, the study focuses on what appreciation is, what it is of, what are the knowledge requirements, what methods enhance it, where it takes place, and its value.

In the nineteenth-century, art appreciation involved mental distancing from practical concerns so as to derive spiritual benefits from exposure to art. As the subject became established in colleges, definitions began to evolve, responding to calls for both specializing and general education. Older notions were soon augmented by newer, sometimes incompatible approaches made possible by revised definitions of both the mind and beauty and shaped by historical events--the flood of immigrants, the threat of anarchy, the influences of industrialization, the emergence of a consumer culture, and the promise of ever greater leisure.

Progressive reform movements gave impetus to new general education courses and eventually provided justifications to make art appreciation a lower-division requirement for undergraduates. The trend toward a general education which included art appreciation also manifested itself in new educational efforts by museums and public libraries, experienced new financial support from public and private sources, and found new expressions through adult education and radio programs.

The history of art appreciation demonstrates a certain ambivalence in purposes, methods, and definitions that is also reflected in the equivocal language of art appreciation textbooks. This equivocation is revealed by analysis that takes into account the influences of institutions within and outside of the artworld. While there are significant differences among the six texts, striking similarities do appear in psychological and aesthetic assumptions which can be seen as self-serving and counter-productive as strategies for enhancing appreciation.

As alternatives, new, more viewer-oriented definitions of appreciation and art are presented, and new scenarios for art appreciation courses are sketched. If institutions within and outside of the artworld significantly affect the understandings and choices in art appreciation studies, as this dissertation demonstrates, then acknowledging (and questioning) such influences constitutes a legitimate new emphasis for art appreciation courses and texts.
