Thesis (M.Ed.)--University of Louisville, 2007.
Childhood obesity is a health problem that has reached epidemic proportions. In addition, there has strong associations correlating childhood obesity with chronic health problems in adults and children. Previous studies have shown that childhood obesity leads to long-term social, economic, and physical health problems in later years. Chronic stress has also been shown to have deleterious effects on health, such as problems at school, health, and sleep. However, little is known on the possible moderating effect of physical activity on stress among obese children. The purpose of this study is to determine the whether physical activity or fitness plays a buffering role on stress among adolescents. Participants will include adolescents, of both genders, from a local high school. Physical fitness will be measured via 3-minute step test, while physical activity will be measured using a MiniMitter ActicalRTM monitor. Body composition will be assessed through skin folds, BMI, and waist circumference. Finally, stress will be measured via questionnaires and salivary cortisol. It is predicted that physical fitness will provide a buffering function against stress.
