The effects of media on body satisfaction of women are well documented. There is also a preponderance of literature concerning the effects of idealized media images of the slender woman on women and girls. The bulk of the data suggests that these print sources produce a negative body image and other unhealthy issues, such as scaled back eating patterns.

Little research has been completed on a series of questions regarding the effects of media consumption of the viewer in relation to body satisfaction and exercise. One question is whether there is a relationship between exercise level and body dissatisfaction after viewing idealized media images. Another is whether there is a relationship among various personal characteristics of the subject, body dissatisfaction, and exercise.

This research studied 141 college females at two different universities concerning their level of exercise and body dissatisfaction. These subjects were exposed to slides of idealized media images of the slender, super fit female. The subjects' body dissatisfaction levels were assessed at pretest and posttest. The data were analyzed using multiple regression analysis.

The results of the study indicate that this group of college females was committed to exercise. Overall, the subjects were satisfied with their body parts prior to exposure to the idealized media images. After viewing the idealized media images, the subjects were influenced and an increase in body dissatisfaction was apparent. As exercise levels increased, body dissatisfaction decreased. As number of days per week of exercise increased, body dissatisfaction decreased. As number of days per week and number of minutes per day of exercise increased, body dissatisfaction decreased. As involvement in self-directed cardio exercise increased, body dissatisfaction decreased. Those that smoke were more dissatisfied with their body regardless of exercise. Overall, body satisfaction remained strong.
