Thesis (M.A.L.S.)--State University of New York Empire State College, 2008.
In this thesis, the practice of meditation is explained and the ways in which meditation can benefit us and contribute to our holistic wellness is demonstrated by research studies. The histories, philosophies, different styles and intentions of meditation in Hinduism, Buddhism and Taoism are explored. There is disagreement over the possible negative effects of using meditation in psychiatric and psychological therapies, as well as aspects that may make the practice of meditation difficult or inappropriate for some people. These issues are examined and suggestions offered for reducing and reinterpreting some of these negative participant experiences.

This thesis correlates particular ancient beliefs concerning the benefits of meditation with the findings of modern scientific research. My personal experiences of meditating over the past twenty three years are described, as well as my observations of teaching meditation. The thesis concludes with considerations concerning future research in the field of meditation and relaxation.
