Thesis (M.S.)--California State University, Long Beach, 2007.
Children and adolescents are exposed to the acceptance of alcohol and tobacco use through the media and social environments. The following project report examines the perceived risks that substance use has on children and adolescents. Substances distinctively examined include: tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, and inhalants, all of which are highly accessible to the youth of society. The methodology of this report consists of an extensive literature review compiled of academic peer reviewed journals, text books, and statistical information gathered from government and agency research. Through the examination of several programs it can be suggested that prevention must incorporate the community and family environments. Findings suggest that the initiation of substance use at a young age can lead to the likelihood of continued use and be correlated to peer influence. To increase academic achievement and healthy development, research must continue to evaluate prevention efforts in order to aid in the advancement of youth.Subjects--Topical Terms:
