The purpose of this study was to examine how a particular group of college students conceptualized healthy sexuality. As a measurement of subjectivity, Q methodology was used to gain an understanding of the different ways in which college students at a Midwestern university made meaning of healthy sexuality.

A total of 19 subjects sorted 56 statements of healthy sexuality on a continuum of most important (+5) to most unimportant (-5). These sorts were factor analyzed and rotated. To aid in the interpretation, the Demographic and Dating History Questionnaire-US (Renaud & Byers, 1999) and the Sexual Opinion Survey (SOS) Short Form (Fisher et al., 1988) were also completed by each subject.

Following these procedures, a total of 3 factors emerged. These factors were named: Factor A: My partner and I/What we 'should' be doing; Factor B: The freedom to find our own way/Making it better for everyone; and Factor C: Men will be men/It's all about the sex. Factor A subjects were predominantly in monogamous heterosexual relationships and emphasized traditional values that were centered around sexuality in the context of a relationship. Subjects in Factor A had the lowest SOS scores, indicating they were the most erotophobic of the groups. Factor B subjects were sexually diverse and as such focused predominantly on sexual rights and freedoms. They were also the group who had received the most abstinence-only education, yet scored the highest SOS scores indicating they had the most erotophilic attitudes towards sexuality. Factor C subjects were all men. Being male was the sole defining characteristic as SOS scores and all other demographic information varied. This group focused predominantly on sexual behavior as an important element of healthy sexuality.

The findings highlighted that the college students in this study had a very clear idea of what did not constitute healthy sexuality, but that they struggled with what healthy sexuality would entail. Further studies may seek to utilize a higher number of subjects to clarify the integrity of the factors. It also may be important to evaluate the implications of a sex-negative (focusing on morbidity and mortality) orientation on sexual health.
